first surgeons chosen to participate in clinical trials for the
LAP-BAND® System and one of first surgeons approved by the FDA for
its use. And just this year, Dr. Katkhouda was the first surgeon in
California to do single access laparoscopic surgery with the Realize

"The impact of bariatric, or weight loss surgery is profound," says
Katkhouda, professor of surgery and director of the Keck School of
Medicine's minimally invasive surgery program. "It is one of the
most gratifying surgeries I perform."

Although these new
surgeries to achieve weight loss, have greatly reduced the risks,
not all patients are suitable for laparoscopic weight reduction
surgery, only your surgeon can make the final decision, and after
surgery, the patient must still make behavioral changes to control
and maintain their weight loss. Proper diet and foods, in the
correct amounts are still very important.

Mission Statement:
To provide the best available surgical principles and care for those
patients in need of surgery for thoracic conditions. Dr. Katkhouda
is dedicated to helping patients and physicians discover the
benefits of Laparoscopy. He welcomes inquiries about these
procedures including adjustable gastric banding system and
laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. Use of this site does not in
any way replace the valuable opinion of your personal healthcare
provider.
"Morbid obesity is considered by the government and medical
profession as a chronic disease, no different from diabetes, cancer
or anything else," Katkhouda says. "And overeating is now recognized
as an addiction no different than smoking, gambling or alcoholism."
The threshold for surgery is typically a BMI over 40, or between 30
and 35 if the patient also has a disease related to obesity, such as
diabetes or sleep apnea.
The surgery generally improves overall well-being and has been shown
to help reduce obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, high
blood pressure, depression and lower back pain. There has been
discussion about offering the surgery to diabetics with lesser
degrees of obesity, although it is not currently permitted in the
U.S., Katkhouda says.
"It is a serious commitment, and patients considering bariatric
surgery should research the program thoroughly," he says. "But for
many patients, the results are astonishing."
